Khan Younis prison is one of the most prominent projects of reconstruction that launched by Minister of Interior Mr. Fathi Hammad, after the Israeli aggression destroyed the majority of Interior Ministry's headquarters in the last war.
Khan Younis prison is considered a obvious successful landmark which achieved by the Interior Ministry, and a model of good treatment with detainees by offering excellent services for detainees.
Maj. Muneeb Hamdan, director general of Khan Younis Prison, emphasized on the role of the prison administration in rehabilitating the detainees, explaining that they are living a decent life, "particularly that the prison offered to all detainees distinguished services, so that they can integrate the detainees in the community despite the lack of material resources."
Maj. Hamdan said to Interior Ministry's website: " Khan Younis prison was opened in June 2010, according to a resolution issued by the Minister of Interior, which consists of 11 rooms and have capacity for 180 detainees, also it contains two cafeterias that provide all daily needs," pointing that building others four rooms is underway.
Hamdan explained that the detainees' rooms at Khan Younis prison contain a fan, refrigerator and TV, and he said: "The detainees are allowed to acquire a private fan or TV, as well as medical clinic, which contains all drugs that may need the detainees."
"We have a private radio station in the prison, that broadcasts sermons and Quran in addition to cultural and recreational programs." Maj. Hamdan said.
He showed that currently there are 185 detainees in the prison of Khan Younis, whose sentences do not exceed seven years, noting that more than seven years, the detainee "will be transferred to Gaza Central Prison."
With regard to the means that used by the prison administration to rehabilitate detainees to become good citizens in the community, Maj. Hamdan confirmed that they have several means to promote the detainees religiously, socially and intellectually through sermons, in cooperation with the political and moral guidance commission and Ministry of Awqaf and Religious Affairs. "
"Khan Younis prison has a library containing dozens of cultural and religious books, novels and stories, provided by the Red Cross, Municipality of Khan Younis, political and moral guidance commission and Ministry of Awqaf." Maj. Hamdan added.
Hamdan pointed out that the prison is located in an area surrounded by farms, whereas, the detainees are planting and breeding animals, and the prison administration grant them a financial reward placed on his account in the prison's cafeteria, adding: "We have a carpentry workshop to activate the work of craftsmen, also, we intend to provide a number of sewing machines.
Once again, Maj. Hamdan reiterated that all detainees in Khan Younis prison are living a decent life, and its administration rejects all forms of beatings or physical abuse, calling on all human rights organizations to visit the prison.
