A seven-month infant died late Friday in Gaza city when the electric respiratory device used to help him breath suddenly stopped as a result of a power outage.

Spokesman for Gaza ambulance and emergency committee Adham Abu Silmiya said the infant, Mohamed Al-Hilou, was born with a congenital defect, so a respiratory device was needed to siphon out the sputum and help him respire.

As a result of the widespread blackout in Gaza, the spokesman added, the father of the infant activated the generator during the night hours in order to power the device and as the family was asleep, the generator stopped running unexpectedly and consequently, the device also stopped leading to the death of his baby.

This infant is the first victim of the power crisis in Gaza.
