Foreign affairs minister of the European Union Catherine Ashton has called for ending the Israeli blockade on Gaza and opening all crossings of the Strip.

She told a press conference at a training facility for UNRWA in Gaza on Wednesday that she always asks the Israelis to end the Gaza siege, open crossings, and allow Gazans to build a better future.

Ashton signed an agreement with UNRWA commissioner general Filippo Grandi by which the EU would extend 55 million Euros as a contribution to the agency’s budget.

For his part, Grandi said that the EU contribution constituted 10% of the total budget of UNRWA, and hoped that it would continue to support the agency’s services and commitments toward the Palestinian refugees.
